Get the Most Out of Your Angel Card Reading

Whether you are new to the realm of oracle card reading, or you own every deck the infamous Doreen Virtue has ever published; this quick guide is meant to give beginners and seasoned readers alike a more meaningful, decisive card reading.  Try these tips with self-readings and service readings for others.  Take time practicing your own variations on these tips. With a little patience and a little practice, you will find a reading regimen that works best for you!

CHOOSING A DECK

There are many ways to choose an Angel Card deck. The trick is to find the way that works for YOU. No one method is better than the next when it comes to making such a personal decision…and choosing your deck is a very personal decision. Try not to be swayed by the input of others. Here are some tips when shopping for your Angel Card deck. Following these tips will help insure you get the best deck for your needs, that works best with your energy.

  • Choose to buy your deck on the new moon of the month. Energy will be high for new beginnings and manifesting future dreams on that day.
  • Take time in the days leading up to the new moon to meditate on choosing your deck. As you meditate, visualize yourself finding the perfect deck. See yourself find the deck that has been waiting for you. Ask your Angels and Spirit Guides to unite you with your perfect deck.
  • It is highly recommended that you shop alone for your deck on this day. This will allow you the peace and personal time you will need to make the best choice.
  • More than one deck may call out to you as you are shopping on the new moon. You may need to step away for a moment to meditate. Center yourself and call on your Angels again to help you choose wisely.
  • Hold each deck that calls to you in your hands. Close your eyes for a moment with each one and feel its energy. If you get tingles, feel heat throughout your body or just in your hands, if you start feeling emotional, or if you see an Angel appear in your mind’s eye, this may be the deck for you!
  • Choose the deck from which you receive the most spiritual feedback.

WORKING WITH THE CARDS

Keep in mind, these tips will work whether you are doing a personal or service reading. However, additional steps are recommended for better accuracy when giving readings to another person (a service reading). As soon as you open your new Angel Card deck, be sure to cleanse it with white sage, and prepare a safe and cleansed space to store it. A bag or box with clear quartz and a few white sage leaves inside is highly recommended! Once your deck is cleansed and has a proper home, it is ready to be programmed and used.

  • Using white sage, cleanse a quite, comfortable space to do your reading. Clear the space of clutter and distractions. Turn off your phone.
  • Lay a special cloth over the space where you will spread your cards. The cloth may be of any material or pattern, as long as it is meaningful to you. (Note: if you are doing a service reading, you may want to substitute with a cloth chosen by the patron of your service.)
  • Do not clutter your reading space. You may choose to burn one white candle (or any color you feel you need). You may place a sentimental object in the reading space as well: a picture of the person you will be inquiring about, an item from a deceased loved one, or a token of gratitude to your Angel helpers!
  • Before you begin shuffling, hold the deck in your hands and program it with a prayer of intention. You may want to cleanse and reprogram your deck every time you use it, as your need for guidance may change from reading to reading. Your prayer of intention may be as simple or complex as you wish, but make sure it is focused and precise. Pray to the Angels to give you the best guidance for the situation about which you will soon inquire. Always close your prayer with a word of gratitude for whatever guidance you will receive.
  • Choose your questions wisely! Always ask for guidance for the highest good of all involved. Refrain from phrasing asking questions which promote the “commanding of” or “forcing your will upon” others. Do not let your ego get in the way of pure Angelic guidance. You may need to do a short breathing exercise and meditation before you ask your question. This will help you ask the right questions, resulting in helpful guidance for the highest good of all involved. Keep shuffling until the right question comes to you. Ask the question aloud 3 times.
  • Place the deck on your cloth. Cut the deck once, then draw the cards for your layout from the top of the deck (I highly recommend the 3-card “Past, Present, Future” layout). You are now ready to start interpreting!
  • Use your intuition along with the included guidebook for your specific deck. If you are having trouble interpreting the card layout, ask your Angel helpers for one “clarify-er” card. Draw one addition card and place it above your layout for additional guidance.
  • Keep a blank journal, and pen handy in case you wish to write any notes down from your reading.
  • Be sure to thank the Angels for their help before closing your reading.

I hope these little tips help you get the maximum divine guidance from every reading you do for yourself and others!

Candle Perfection!

Getting a candle to burn perfectly is not actually that hard.  Getting familiar with how to burn different styles of candle will make experiences more safe, economical, and pleasurable.  Burners will hardly even need cleaning when candles taken care of, as there will be no soot or wax left over.  Burning candles flawlessly is a form of art. Here are my favorite tips on get the most burn for your buck.

The smallest candle can sometimes bring the most clarity.  Meditation candles, also called “chime candles” after the popular angel chime Christmas decorations, are about one half-inch in diameter and four inches high. They burn two to two and a half hours each.  Always use a mini candle holder to burn these, also set the holder on a plate to catch running wax.  I usually don’t worry about trimming the wick as long as they are short and burning in a draft-free area.  If you choose to anoint the candle with oil, please use natural essential oils. Sometimes it’s nice to scratch  names or an affirmations into the wax before lighting the candle. The purpose is to send your intentions into the universe, manifested.  If the goal is to burn a bunch of candles and you don’t have burners, put at least an inch of sand into the bottom of a dish and stick the candles into the sand.  Always watch these quick burning candles, especially if you’re burning them in sand.  For extra meditation candle fun, combine color and aromatherapy, or consult Llewellyn’s 2011 spell-a-day almanac.  Large dinner candles  can also be used in meditation.  We carry high quality hand dipped tapers from Canada.

Although a burning candle should never be left alone, votives are a good choice of candle for burning in bedrooms and bathrooms.  Smaller areas really don’t need all the scent thrown from a large candle anyways.  The typical votive lasts up to fifteen hours.  The snugger the fit of candle in holder, the longer it will burn.  More space left on the sides of the candle allows more heated air to circulate around the flame, thus burning the wax faster.  If the holder is shorter than the candle, the wax will spill all over as it liquefies.  Removing the bottom sticker on candles is important and easy to forget.  I’ve just about given my self a heart attack more than once when out of the corner of my eye flames are shooting out of my burner.  When the candle is gone and left over wax remains in the burner there are easy ways of getting it out.  Think ahead by adding about half a teaspoon of water to the bottom of a votive glass. This prevents the wax from ever bonding to the bottom of the container.  The second method employs the freezer.  Make sure the wax has cooled to a solid and place container in the freezer for about one hour.  Free wax from sides of container with a butter knife if it doesn’t just fall out.  If neither of these work, slowly heat a small amount of water in a pot, set container in the warm water.  Soon the wax will start to liquefy and release from the bottom and sides of container.  Do not let any water get into the wax, this will cause a huge spattery mess.  Pour out what you can, wipe with tissue, wipe with vegetable oil, and last wash with hot soapy water to remove any traces of oil.  I say clean waxy glass with vegetable oil because as we learned in chemistry; like dissolves like-and it works. If black soot accumulates around the rim, wipe with a dry paper towel or even newspaper. Whatever the reason, dry works better than moist towels when it’s soot you’re dealing with.

Pillar candles look elegant and offer a warm glow.  Always make sure to trim the wick to one-quarter inch before lighting.  Allow to wax pool to extend all the way across the top, and if the sides start bowing out hug the edges in toward the flame by gently pushing in with thumbs .  Typically, this takes one hour for every inch across, and when done properly prevents the candle from tunneling.  If tunneling already has begun and you’re trying to keep the wick from being buried there’s a couple of ways of trouble shooting the problem.  Start by removing only the carbon buildup from the wick tip.  This usually resembles a little mushroom on the top.  If the candle will not stay lit try heating with a lighter while holding sideways to drip out over a coffee can, trash bag, etc revealing the wick.  Keep the candle burning by pouring out small amounts of wax as needed while hugging the tall sides in as they soften.Eventually the walls will level with the center  Once in a while, I’ve had one so bad that I pull out a saw and cut off some of the top rim.  If the wick is  far down the wax sides will only continue to drown it. To prevent tunneling,  make sure the wick is center when you blow it out. If it’s leaning to one side, use the end of your wick trimmers or a pencil to push it to center while the wax is still warm.  When the wax cools the wick will remain centered and ready for the next time it’s lit. If you need to blow a candle out early, just allow it to burn a little longer next time to even it out.  Don’t forget to use a pillar plate or coaster to protect surfaces from oil staining.

Jar candles are a low maintenance way of enjoying light and fragrance.  Really, the only keys to remember are keep the wicks centered and trimmed to prevent the flame from touching the side of the jar, blackening it or breaking it. Allow them to burn one hour for every inch in diameter to make sure all the surface wax pools.  Extinguish flame when there is less than half an inch of wax remaining in the glass. The glass gets extremely hot when the candle is that low and could ruin table surfaces or crack the glass.

Take into consideration what’s overhead and underfoot in areas you burn candles.  For instance, a candle may look nice on a shelf above the television but what happens if there is an accident?  Or areas where there are pictures or cabinets overhead, feel the areas above burning candles and make sure they’re not getting too hot.  The same rule applies to burning clusters of different height candles, if placed too close together they will melt each others sides.  High traffic and pet areas are, for obvious reasons, big no-no’s as well.  Instead of blowing candles use a snuffer to prevent spraying wax everywhere.  I hope these tips light the way to perfect candle burning and clarity.  If there are any further questions about, feel free to stop in the store and ask a sales associate.

Setting Healthy Boundaries

Healthy boundaries are vital to the success of all relationships. From business partners to best friends, parents to romantic partners, healthy boundaries are needed to establish a border between where you end and another person begins. Boundaries are used to establish limits that protect your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. When boundaries are too fluid (or non-existent) you may find yourself drained by giving more of yourself (emotional or financially) than you are able to spare. If you are the type of person who can not say no to others’ requests, or feel terribly guilty when doing so; you may have weak or non-existent boundaries. Similarly, when boundaries are too rigid, you may find yourself closed off from others, unable to establish close and meaningful relationships. If you find yourself unable to trust others, or unwilling to share yourself in a healthy and moderate way; your boundaries may be too rigid.

Loose boundaries are a recipe for drama, and rigid boundaries are a recipe for loneliness. Our goal is to find a middle ground in establishing healthy boundaries that serve our highest good and our greatest wellness. Here are a few things to consider when embarking on a journey to set healthy boundaries for yourself and your life:

  • It is OK to say no to others’ requests. Take time to consider the request before answering. Calculate the risks to yourself and others. If you find the sacrifice is too great, you will know you have the right to say no.
  • Remember to take time out for yourself. There are times when we must give more of ourselves than we think we can. For example, a loved one may fall ill and need your support, or your spouse may be laid off and depend on you to pull the family through hard financial times. Still, it is important that you take at least a few moments out of every day to pamper yourself.  Try a 5 minute morning meditation, or a brisk 10 minute walk in the evening, or take a relaxing 20 minute bath before bed. Find a routine that works for you and stick to it!
  • Seek professional or spiritual counseling, and/or read a few articles or books on creating healthy boundaries. If you feel a lack of healthy boundaries is significantly impacting your life, I highly recommend consulting an expert. It never hurts to seek the guidance of a relationship specialist. Do a Google search for books on boundaries, or for relationship counselors in your area.

Hiddenite – Exposed!

Hiddenite

Hiddenite (Green Kunzite)

Hiddenite (aka Green Kunzite) is the gemstone form of spodumene, varying in color from a translucent light yellow-green to emerald.

This is an excellent stone for anyone who is faced with indecision or uncertainty.  Hiddenite’s energy is an excellent revealer of that which is concealed, either by accident or design, as it eases transfer of knowledge from outside sources.  This often manifests as conventional knowledge (books, television, other people, etc), but can also facilitate realizations from higher or ‘collective’ knowledge.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a little insight into things sometimes?  This month, we’re going to learn how to call for a sign.

A Practice for Calling Insight

1 Blue Candle
1 Piece of Hiddenite
1 Small Candle Holder (or small Dish)

  1. Find a quiet place, with no distractions.
  2. As always, cleanse your area and materials with white sage smoke (or any other method you’re comfortable with)
  3. Turn the lights down, and sit on the floor with your materials.
  4. Visualize the situation you are seeking insight about.  Narrow it down to a single mental image that seems to best sum it up.  Take your time with this – the clearer the image, the better results you will have.
  5. Place your hiddenite in the bottom of the candle holder.
  6. With the image firmly in mind, light the blue candle.  Drip wax from the lit candle into the bottom of the candle holder until the Hiddenite is completely covered.
  7. While the wax is still hot and with the candle lit, push the bottom of the candle down in to the puddle so that it stays upright and in place.
  8. Visualize the blue candle as a beacon, amplifying the hiddenite energy to draw in knowledge of the situation you ‘programmed’ into it.  Burn the candle until it begins to drip, then blow it out.  Do not smother the candle to put it out in this case.
  9. Each night, light the candle for just a few minutes until it begins to drip again, then blow it out.  Do this only once per night.  Each time you do this, you repeat the call for insight.
  10. Watch closely for signs or omens – they can be obvious or cryptic, internal or external, and manifest just about anywhere.  Most importantly, be prepared for the insight when you receive it!

Earth Lore carries hiddenite, as well as all of the other materials mentioned!

Discover Your Animal Totems

Totem Animals

Totem Animals

There is much that can be learned from our companions in the animal kingdom. Every animal has strengths and weaknesses, talents and habits that help us to learn more about ourselves by studying their example. You’ll be happy to know that just as every person has a multitude of personality traits, they also have many animal totems. There are those animals that stay with us for just a short time, while we overcome an obstacle in our lives. There are also who will walk (fly, crawl or swim) with us through life. How do you know which animals are calling to you? This article is just a short description on how to discover some of  your totems. There are not only many, many books written on this subject but also oral traditions that vary from tribe to tribe across the world. Most of the information I’ve compiled comes from Ted Andrews book, “Animal Speak.” It is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more on the subject of Animal Totems.

Totem Discovery Meditation

Enter a space where you will not be interrupted, a secluded spot somewhere in nature would be best but is not mandatory. Relax by taking several deep breaths. Clear your mind.  Begin by lighting a white “Spirit” votive or pillar with the focus of finding one of your animal totems in the forethought of your mind. You may even want to ask Great Spirit or God to bless you and oversee the meditation with divine guidance.

Sitting comfortably, begin to visualize a landscape. Some people will see themselves in a forest; others the desert or sea. It’s okay. Don’t worry that you are “making things up.” Imagination is a gift and a tool. Whatever comes to you is has entered your mind for a reason. Trust this guidance. However it is important to not have any preconceived totems in mind. Let your animal choose you. As you wander your landscape, note the time of day or night. Is it chilly or  can you feel the warm sun shining on you? What do you smell? What do you hear? As you continue your  walk  allow yourself to be open to whatever creatures come to you. Don’t discount the tiny creatures like ants and spiders. Don’t forget to look in the trees or sky. If you feel compelled to turn over a leaf or crawl in a cave, do so.

You will come upon an living creature. This is one of your totems.  Introduce yourself. Do not force interaction, simply let the moment settle in. Thank this totem for making its self known to you. When you are ready begin to come back to a state of consciousness and open your eyes.

Now that you know one of your animal totems, begin your research! Animals can teach us so much about ourselves and how we react to others if we would simply listen. Some things to ponder: Where does this animal live, what does it eat, what eats it? What kind of shelter does it seek? The more you learn about your animal the better. It is important to establish a link to your totem not just through learning about its habits but also learning about its place in mythological lore. To gain a stronger link to this animal you should also have small talismans (like a found feather or bone… however if that isn’t possible at the time being, hanging pictures of it or small carved stones work too). You can keep these on your person or in the areas of your home or work that seem most appropriate. Earth Lore carries small carved stones of many different animals starting at $3.95. We also have a selection of larger statues available for altar use. Having reminders of your totems will greatly increase your connection to these animals. Also, be sure to check out our new and used books about totems, shamanism and animal lore.

Snowflake Obsidian: The Warrior Stone

Are you a Paranormal Investigator, or a parent with young children to protect? Do you have a competitive profession,  or feel as though negativity has taken over your workplace or home? At some point in our lives we will be faced with adversity, negativity, or evil of some form. In any case, be sure you are prepared with the right protection talisman. My number one suggestion is Snowflake Obsidian.

Snowflake Obsidian is a Black Obsidian stone with inclusions of Phenocryst, a white-gray mineral. This mineral resembles a snowflake pattern when the stone is polished, hence the name Snowflake Obsidian. Obsidian is formed volcanically when lava rich in silicic acid rapidly cools. The lava hardens so quickly that no crystalline structures are able to form. The result is an amorphous molten mass containing large amounts of solidified minerals, water, and gas inclusions. This explains why Obsidian is also known as Volcanic Glass.

Because of its volcanic origins, Obsidian is often associated with the Hawaiian volcano goddess, Pele. Pele is a fierce, wrathful warrior who is believed to have the power of turning her enemies to stone. It is the warrior aspect of Pele that concerns us with respect to Snowflake Obsidian and its protective powers. Like Pele, Snowflake Obsidian has the strong energy of a warrior prepared to ward off all evil and negative influences from the wearer. Simply holding a piece of Snowflake Obsidian in your auric field wil create a powerful shield between you and any undesirable energies or negative forces. However, a powerful warrior needs more than just a protective shield. To that end, Snowflake Obsidian aids in maintaining clear mental focus, and emotional well-being. It is a stone of pure intention as a good warrior always has a pure heart and works for the highest good of the universe. Snowflake Obsidian is also an excellent grounding stone, aiding the wearer in maintaining balance and moderation at all times.

Un-Crossing

Un-Crossing

Un-Crossing

Do you feel stuck and unable to move forward in your career, love life, or finances? If so, you are not alone. There are many people experiencing this “stuck” feeling, to varying degrees.  Whether you believe it’s a karmic debt you are paying off, a past-life issue, a spell cast upon you, or plain old bad judgment and poor planning on your part…the feeling of being stuck in a rut is the same: You feel tired, hopeless, frustrated with yourself and others, and angry with yourself and others. The feeling is there when you wake up in the morning, it hangs around all day, and is with you when you go to sleep (if you can sleep). For those of you struggling to regain your power and confidence to move forward, I humbly offer this “Un-Crossing Oil” recipe as one small step you can take on your path to freedom.

What is an “Un-Crossing” Oil?

Un-Crossing Oil is a powerful blend of natural herbs and essential oils that promote positive energy and protection, aid in manifesting one’s desires, enhance self-confidence, and help one be the “master” of one’s own destiny. If you are looking to change your luck or break a “spell”, this is the oil to use! This oil can be used as a daily personal fragrance, or burned in an aroma diffuser. You may also add some fragrance to a spray bottle filled with water and use it as a daily ritual mist.

Un-Crossing Oil Recipe

In a 1/2  oz. vial mix the following:

5 drops Bergamot Oil

10 drops Geranium Oil

5 drops Rosemary Oil

5 drops Vetivert Oil

(Note: Essential Oils work best for this blend.)

A pinch of Myrrh Resin

A pinch of dried Rue Herb

One tiny piece of Clear Quartz Crystal

Directions: Clear yourself and space of negative energy by burning a few leaves of White Sage.  Burn one white candle for purification and one black candle for protection. Focus on your intentions for making this oil blend. Slowly put the ingredients above into your glass vial.  Fill the remaining part of the vial with a Grapeseed or Jojoba base oil. Shake well. Write your full name on the bottle with a permanent marker. Put a small drop of oil on your 3rd Eye Chakra and say a prayer/affirmation of freedom and abundance of your choosing. Your oil is now charged and ready for daily use.

(Recommendation: This is now your personal Un-Crossing Oil with your name on it, infused with YOUR energy and intentions. I do not recommend using it on friends and family. Even if they are experiencing the same feelings and issues as you, I highly recommend they make their own personal oil and infuse it with their own energy for better results.)

Break the chains! Many blessings on your path to freedom, and thank you for sharing our Earth lore newsletter.

Prasiolite – Light the Fuse!

by Grant

Prasiolite (aka ‘green amethyst’, ‘amegreen’, and ‘vermarine’) is a fibrous inclusion of magnesium and iron aluminosilicates in quartz.  In simpler terms, it’s very similar to amethyst except that it’s green.  It’s generally found in Brazil, though other deposits have been known to come from Canada and Poland.

This is a stone of prosperity, though not in the sense of winning money or coming upon it unexpectedly.  Prasiolite’s energy is geared strongly toward what really brings us success – wise decision-making, attraction of people and situations that further your goals, and strength to begin new ventures.  If you’re more inclined to work for what you want than to wait or gamble for it, prasiolite’s energy could be for you!

A Practice for Prosperity with Pennies and Prasiolite

  • 1 Piece of prasiolite
  • 1 Small object that symbolizes a new goal or venture
  • 1 Pouch or square of fabric in gold or purple
  • 1 Small dish or bowl
  • Enough pennies to fill the bowl

This simple practice creates building momentum toward your goal, and allows the exchange of prosperous energy between you and the universe around you.

As with all practices, it is recommended that you first cleanse your materials by passing them through white sage smoke (or with any cleansing method you are familiar with).

  1. Take a piece of prasiolite and place it in a gold or purple pouch with the small symbolic object.
  2. Place the pouch in the bowl, laying it as flat as possible against the bottom.
  3. Visualize your goals, and the vast network of people, money and situations that will be necessary to realize them.  With this image firmly fixed in your mind, pour pennies into the dish until they completely cover the pouch.
  4. Place this dish by your bedside.  Each day, re-visualize your goal and take a penny from the dish.  Over the course of the day, spend or donate the penny somewhere.  It doesn’t matter where.  If you lose the penny, or fail to spend it, place three in the dish to replace it at the end of the day.
  5. When all pennies are spent, give the stone away to someone who needs it.  Keep the symbolic object near where you do business.

Earth Lore carries the tumbled prasiolite, pouches, and white sage for this practice.

Mabon

by Larissa

Happy Mabon

Happy Mabon!

Mabon occurs sometime between the 19th and the 23rd of September. This equinox notes the halfway point of the Sun’s path through the zodiac. The exact date shifts from year to year, marked when the sun moves from Virgo to Libra in the sky and crosses the celestial equator for the second time, now headed south.

The Sun enters Virgo August 23rd and leaves 22nd. Linked to the Earth harvest goddess, Demeter, Virgo invites us to take chances stemming from a place of confidence. We should accept our gifts and hone our skills. During this time take in the bountiful harvest, show beauty and the power of the goddess in all the work you do.

The sun enters Libra the 23rd and remains til October 23rd. The balance sought by the scales of Libra is, for a moment, found as days and nights; light and dark, become equal. While in Libra, allow focus to be on outward manifestation for the last time before turning inward. This turning point, as summer turns to fall, is when achievements are measured. This time represents justice, intelligence, gentleness, thanksgiving, and charm.

Mabon is the second of three harvest festivals carrying a theme of mysteries. A fairly neo-pagan holiday, Mabon combines a vestige of ancient harvest festivals. Cultures of all kinds use the equinoxes as traditional times to celebrate planting and the harvest season. Nonetheless, seasonal and astronomical events occur at equinoxes and are readily observed by the natural world.

This is a time of ritual thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth, and recognition of the need to share them to secure future blessings. Colors associated with Mabon are red, orange, and brown. Some plants used as symbols include: anise, benzoin, cedar, chamomile, clove, frankincense, honeysuckle (woodbine), juniper, myrrh, fir, roses, rue, sage, thistle, and yarrow. Include any of these herbs or oils in combination with stones and candles to create your own solitary Mabon ritual. Make notes in your journal or book of shadows to fine tune your ritual for next year.

I was inspired to include this suggestion to create a ritual by”Cunningham’s Book of Shadows”. In the back appendix there is a memoir written by David Harrington. He talks about exploring nature like the old ones did, rather than from books in a library. Not to say there is ANYTHING wrong with books, or that one should not know and honor the Craft.  Moreover, it is a reminder to get out and create one’s own experiences in addition to versed rituals.  Here’s a little maple leaf ritual from Scott Cunningham to bring success.

You will need:

  • a candle holder
  • an orange candle
  • colorful maple leaves.
  1. Arrange the leaves around the base of the candle holder(not too close!)
  2. Visualize success you wish to achieve
  3. Light your candle and say: “I call upon Jupiter to aid me please
Bring abundance into my life by the power of three

I am open to new opportunities and success.
As this maple leaf spell spins out, may I be truly blessed
By the power of the harvest and of the herbal trees
In the best possible way-abundance will come to me!”
  4. Allow candle to burn out, gather maple leaves and leftover wax, tuck inside an envelope and keep to further empower your spell.

At autumn equinox we’re reminded that in all endings, there are also beginnings, and fields which are cut down will also one day rise again.
