Earth Lore Livonia: Moving May 31, 2011

As many of our regular customers already know, Earth Lore is going to be closing its Livonia location on May 31st, 2011 and moving the inventory to our larger Plymouth location.  We have spent 14 wonderful and successful years serving the community there, and the business has finally outgrown our first tiny shop to the extent that we feel the time is right to make this change.

In 2003, we opened our much larger Plymouth location with the intention of moving the entire business there.  Instead, we found ourselves with two full-scale shops that were each successful in their own right.  While we couldn’t be happier about the community support that made this happen, Earth Lore is still a very small business with a very small staff, and is more suited to one location than two.

Now, eight years later, we are finishing the move we began when we opened Earth Lore Plymouth.  We chose downtown Plymouth for several reasons: better parking, a thriving downtown full of other small shops and restaurants, a MUCH bigger space (4 times the size of the Livonia store!), local festivals, etc.  It’s a vibrant, beautiful downtown area and complements Earth Lore nicely.

Most of all, we chose Plymouth for its proximity to Livonia – less than 10 miles from our Livonia shop!  In changing our location, we wanted to do our best not to lose the customers that make the store possible to begin with.  We know that moving the store at all is inconvenient to some folks, but promise that the Plymouth store is well worth the short extra trip!

On behalf of all of us here at Earth Lore, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making these stores possible.  It is your interest and support that not only allows us to be in this most unusual of businesses, but also for making the journey worth the while.

Namasté,
The Earth Lore Staff

Get the Most Out of Your Angel Card Reading

Whether you are new to the realm of oracle card reading, or you own every deck the infamous Doreen Virtue has ever published; this quick guide is meant to give beginners and seasoned readers alike a more meaningful, decisive card reading.  Try these tips with self-readings and service readings for others.  Take time practicing your own variations on these tips. With a little patience and a little practice, you will find a reading regimen that works best for you!

CHOOSING A DECK

There are many ways to choose an Angel Card deck. The trick is to find the way that works for YOU. No one method is better than the next when it comes to making such a personal decision…and choosing your deck is a very personal decision. Try not to be swayed by the input of others. Here are some tips when shopping for your Angel Card deck. Following these tips will help insure you get the best deck for your needs, that works best with your energy.

  • Choose to buy your deck on the new moon of the month. Energy will be high for new beginnings and manifesting future dreams on that day.
  • Take time in the days leading up to the new moon to meditate on choosing your deck. As you meditate, visualize yourself finding the perfect deck. See yourself find the deck that has been waiting for you. Ask your Angels and Spirit Guides to unite you with your perfect deck.
  • It is highly recommended that you shop alone for your deck on this day. This will allow you the peace and personal time you will need to make the best choice.
  • More than one deck may call out to you as you are shopping on the new moon. You may need to step away for a moment to meditate. Center yourself and call on your Angels again to help you choose wisely.
  • Hold each deck that calls to you in your hands. Close your eyes for a moment with each one and feel its energy. If you get tingles, feel heat throughout your body or just in your hands, if you start feeling emotional, or if you see an Angel appear in your mind’s eye, this may be the deck for you!
  • Choose the deck from which you receive the most spiritual feedback.

WORKING WITH THE CARDS

Keep in mind, these tips will work whether you are doing a personal or service reading. However, additional steps are recommended for better accuracy when giving readings to another person (a service reading). As soon as you open your new Angel Card deck, be sure to cleanse it with white sage, and prepare a safe and cleansed space to store it. A bag or box with clear quartz and a few white sage leaves inside is highly recommended! Once your deck is cleansed and has a proper home, it is ready to be programmed and used.

  • Using white sage, cleanse a quite, comfortable space to do your reading. Clear the space of clutter and distractions. Turn off your phone.
  • Lay a special cloth over the space where you will spread your cards. The cloth may be of any material or pattern, as long as it is meaningful to you. (Note: if you are doing a service reading, you may want to substitute with a cloth chosen by the patron of your service.)
  • Do not clutter your reading space. You may choose to burn one white candle (or any color you feel you need). You may place a sentimental object in the reading space as well: a picture of the person you will be inquiring about, an item from a deceased loved one, or a token of gratitude to your Angel helpers!
  • Before you begin shuffling, hold the deck in your hands and program it with a prayer of intention. You may want to cleanse and reprogram your deck every time you use it, as your need for guidance may change from reading to reading. Your prayer of intention may be as simple or complex as you wish, but make sure it is focused and precise. Pray to the Angels to give you the best guidance for the situation about which you will soon inquire. Always close your prayer with a word of gratitude for whatever guidance you will receive.
  • Choose your questions wisely! Always ask for guidance for the highest good of all involved. Refrain from phrasing asking questions which promote the “commanding of” or “forcing your will upon” others. Do not let your ego get in the way of pure Angelic guidance. You may need to do a short breathing exercise and meditation before you ask your question. This will help you ask the right questions, resulting in helpful guidance for the highest good of all involved. Keep shuffling until the right question comes to you. Ask the question aloud 3 times.
  • Place the deck on your cloth. Cut the deck once, then draw the cards for your layout from the top of the deck (I highly recommend the 3-card “Past, Present, Future” layout). You are now ready to start interpreting!
  • Use your intuition along with the included guidebook for your specific deck. If you are having trouble interpreting the card layout, ask your Angel helpers for one “clarify-er” card. Draw one addition card and place it above your layout for additional guidance.
  • Keep a blank journal, and pen handy in case you wish to write any notes down from your reading.
  • Be sure to thank the Angels for their help before closing your reading.

I hope these little tips help you get the maximum divine guidance from every reading you do for yourself and others!

Overcoming Grief

Cypress Tree

By: Angela

As human beings, we all endure losses, traumatic events, or a crisis of some kind over the course of our lives. Though each of us has our own unique way of coping with hardships and losses, the earth has provided us with universal tools to aid us in our journey back to joy. No matter the loss, the following tools will aid in overcoming grief, healing a broken heart, easing depression and loneliness, and promoting inner peace.

CYPRESS OIL

Used for centuries by mystics of many cultures, Cypress oil is an aromatheraputic tool used in healing and protection rituals. When burned in the home, or worn in a talisman, Cypress oil is a powerful symbol of eternity, healing, and love. Use in times of crisis such as the death of a friend or family member or the end of a significant relationship. Burn the oil in an aroma diffuser every night before bed until your grieving period subsides. You may also put 30 drops of oil in a 4oz spray bottle of distilled water. This spray can be used to mist over your aura when you are grieving, or feeling depressed.

STONES

  • Apache Tears: Helps one relieve sadness and overcome grief
  • Lepidolite: Aids in relieving depression and anxiety
  • Amethyst: Calms fears and helps dispel fear and anger
  • Botswana Agate: Eases loneliness and protects one from negative influences
  • Rose Quartz: Promotes love and harmony

TEAS

  • St. John’s Wort: Helps ease depression
  • Kava-Kava: Aids in relaxation
  • Ginseng: Boosts energy and vitality

Lastly, remember that grief and sadness are normal human experiences. You are not alone in the universe. Use the tools provided here as a supplement to professional counseling, and releasing emotions by writing daily in your journal.

All of the tools above are available at Earth Lore in Plymouth, MI.

Peace be with you.

Nazar and the Evil Eye

Nazars

Nazars (evil eye talismans)

Sounds like a chapter from Harry Potter, doesn’t it?  Well, it’s nothing so fantastical… but much more interesting.  Today we’re going to explore what is likely the most popular protective talisman Americans are not familiar with.  I am speaking of the nazar, or ‘Evil Eye Stone‘.

First, though, a brief overview of what these talismans are created to protect against.  In the Mediterranean (Greece, Iran, Turkey, etc) there is a widespread belief that certain people with particularly piercing gazes can give you bad fortune just by looking at you.  It is also believed that ordinary people can (unintentionally) bring bad luck to one another by looking at something (a person, an object, anything) with envy or jealousy.  Both of these describe the effects of the ‘evil eye’, and it is this which the nazar is made to ward off.

The nazar (aka Lucky Eye, Evil Eye Stone) is usually a flat circle of glass or a bead with circular markings, which looks like a wide-open, gazing eye.  Eye symbols are considered to be protective all over the world, and it’s said that the evil eye talisman moved to the Mediterranean from Egypt, where it invoked the ever-watchful eye of the god Horus, who would watch over the wearer and protect them form thieves and dishonest people.

The use is very easy – simply wear one as jewelry, or put one on anything that might draw anyone’s envy.  Traditionally common objects protected by a nazar are people, cars, houses, businesses, babies, and even cellphones.

Earth Lore, of course, carries nazar bracelets, charms, and other items!

Scents of Harmony

by: Angela

Aromatherapy is a powerful tool to use for promoting harmony and balance in your daily life. From burning incense and candles to creating oil blends for the body, you can manifest a harmonious environment wherever you go with the power of scent. Below is a list of scents you can use to bring peace, protection, love, and positive energy into your life everyday. I have included some basic blends and uses for these scents to manifest the most harmonious results.

ORANGE

Orange is a great ‘pick me up’ scent, offering a burst of positive energy whenever you burn it. I highly recommend burning Orange as a stick incense, or burning Essential Orange oil in an aroma diffuser. Since citrus is a universally delicious scent, feel free to burn the oil in any environment you choose. (Can’t use an aroma diffuser at work? Try mixing Orange oil with distilled water in a glass spray bottle. Use as a positive energy mist over your aura and around your office anytime!)

MYRRH

Both subtle and seductive, Myrrh is a powerful scent for purification and relaxation. Burn Myrrh as a stick incense, or use the fragrance oil in your ‘home’ aroma diffuser to calm tension and reduce irritability. You may use a Myrrh (or Myrrh & Frankincense) fragrance oil directly on your skin to reduce your own anxiety and dispel negativity.

ROSE

As a scent of unconditional love, Rose is the perfect aroma to have in any home environment.  Burn it as an incense stick, or burn the fragrance oil in an aroma diffuser for an instant calming and loving feeling to fill your home. Rose is also a scent of romantic love. Burn one of Earth lore’s Seduction candles for a passionate night with your partner. Wear Rose fragrance oil daily on your skin to attract romantic  and harmonious love.

JUNIPER BERRY

Protect your home from theft or unwanted visitors by sprinkling dried Juniper Berries at or near all entrances to your home. To dispel unwanted energies created due to family feuds, sprinkle a few drops of Essential Juniper Berry oil in your aroma diffuser with any of the other scents mentioned in this article.

DRAGON’S BLOOD

As one of the most protective of all scents, Dragon’s Blood should be used daily, especially in homes with young children. When burned as a stick incense, candle, or as a fragrance oil, Dragon’s Blood is a powerful protector from unwanted energies, accidents, abuse, depression, and negativity. It can help reduce excitability and confusion. Try burning a Dragon’s Blood candle before bed and anointing your 3rd eye with a drop of Dragon’s Blood fragrance oil. This will help ensure a good night’s sleep and a positive, productive day ahead.

LILY OF THE VALLEY

Few scents are as happily uplifting as Lily of the Valley. Lily of the Valley should be used in homes where family members suffer from depression, anger issues, mood swings, substance abuse, and stress-related illnesses. Burn Lily of the Valley as a stick incense or use the fragrance oil in an aroma diffuser. You may also mix the fragrance oil with distilled water in a glass spray bottle. The spray will be safe to spray over the aura, and over linens and furniture. Keep the spray accessible to anyone in the home who may need to be uplifted. (Tip for parents: put a few drops of Lily of the Valley oil on a cotton ball and put it in your child’s pocket. Instruct him/her to sniff the cotton ball if they feel anxious, angry, or depressed at school. This will help comfort them anytime you are apart.)

All of these wonderful scents are available at Earth Lore in Plymouth, MI. Thank you for reading, and for your continued patronage.

Bismuth – Stone of Connection

by Grant

Bismuth

Bismuth Crystal

When it’s cold outside and many of us haven’t seen the sun in a few months, we can begin to feel a little isolated from the rest of humanity.  Even those of us who work with people every day can, at times, feel disconnected from our local and global communities.  Lots of people feel this way.

There are all sorts of things out there meant to alleviate these kinds of feelings – everything from prescriptions and herbal remedies to simply getting out more.  In the crystal and mineral spectrum, however, bismuth is the crystal of choice in these situations.  It is known to alleviate feelings of loneliness or disconnectedness, and helps one to feel more in touch with the present moment and the rest of humanity.

This month, I’d like to offer a simple practice with Bismuth to help with the wintertime isolation blues.

  • A piece of crystalline Bismuth
  • 1 piece of red thread

As usual, cleanse your materials first by smudging with white sage, or holding in running water for a moment.

More often than not, practices like these are done by yourself in a quiet place to help center your energy.  Well, this time we’re going to do something different – that is, you will need to find a place with people in it where you can sit quietly and not be disturbed.  Libraries, book stores, and cafeterias are good for this.

  1. Meditate on the shape of the bismuth crystal – a great network of bends and twists, peaks and valleys – all winding together to make the whole crystal.  People are all connected in this way.
  2. Hold the bismuth in your left hand.
  3. Now, casually scan the people around you for those who are giving off good energy.  They will often be the ones smiling, but sometimes can be found deep in thought or hard at work.  People give off lots of different kinds of energy – use your intuition.
  4. Realize that you have a fundamental connection with each of these people.  They are family and friends of friends and family, and the good energy they are giving away is also yours to share.
  5. Visualize the stone absorbing some of this energy, and glowing with a soft blue light.
  6. Return some good energy by quietly and sincerely hoping these people fare well on their journey.
  7. Repeat 1-6 as often as you like.  Do not re-cleanse the crystal.
  8. Tie the thread around the bismuth crystal, and hang it near the front entrance of your home where it can interact with the energy of everyone who comes and goes – strengthening the connection.

The energy from this simple talisman can keep you spiritually warm on the coldest winter nights.

Enjoy!

Earth Lore carries bismuth crystals – and if you ask nicely we might even give you some red thread for it.

Candle Perfection!

Getting a candle to burn perfectly is not actually that hard.  Getting familiar with how to burn different styles of candle will make experiences more safe, economical, and pleasurable.  Burners will hardly even need cleaning when candles taken care of, as there will be no soot or wax left over.  Burning candles flawlessly is a form of art. Here are my favorite tips on get the most burn for your buck.

The smallest candle can sometimes bring the most clarity.  Meditation candles, also called “chime candles” after the popular angel chime Christmas decorations, are about one half-inch in diameter and four inches high. They burn two to two and a half hours each.  Always use a mini candle holder to burn these, also set the holder on a plate to catch running wax.  I usually don’t worry about trimming the wick as long as they are short and burning in a draft-free area.  If you choose to anoint the candle with oil, please use natural essential oils. Sometimes it’s nice to scratch  names or an affirmations into the wax before lighting the candle. The purpose is to send your intentions into the universe, manifested.  If the goal is to burn a bunch of candles and you don’t have burners, put at least an inch of sand into the bottom of a dish and stick the candles into the sand.  Always watch these quick burning candles, especially if you’re burning them in sand.  For extra meditation candle fun, combine color and aromatherapy, or consult Llewellyn’s 2011 spell-a-day almanac.  Large dinner candles  can also be used in meditation.  We carry high quality hand dipped tapers from Canada.

Although a burning candle should never be left alone, votives are a good choice of candle for burning in bedrooms and bathrooms.  Smaller areas really don’t need all the scent thrown from a large candle anyways.  The typical votive lasts up to fifteen hours.  The snugger the fit of candle in holder, the longer it will burn.  More space left on the sides of the candle allows more heated air to circulate around the flame, thus burning the wax faster.  If the holder is shorter than the candle, the wax will spill all over as it liquefies.  Removing the bottom sticker on candles is important and easy to forget.  I’ve just about given my self a heart attack more than once when out of the corner of my eye flames are shooting out of my burner.  When the candle is gone and left over wax remains in the burner there are easy ways of getting it out.  Think ahead by adding about half a teaspoon of water to the bottom of a votive glass. This prevents the wax from ever bonding to the bottom of the container.  The second method employs the freezer.  Make sure the wax has cooled to a solid and place container in the freezer for about one hour.  Free wax from sides of container with a butter knife if it doesn’t just fall out.  If neither of these work, slowly heat a small amount of water in a pot, set container in the warm water.  Soon the wax will start to liquefy and release from the bottom and sides of container.  Do not let any water get into the wax, this will cause a huge spattery mess.  Pour out what you can, wipe with tissue, wipe with vegetable oil, and last wash with hot soapy water to remove any traces of oil.  I say clean waxy glass with vegetable oil because as we learned in chemistry; like dissolves like-and it works. If black soot accumulates around the rim, wipe with a dry paper towel or even newspaper. Whatever the reason, dry works better than moist towels when it’s soot you’re dealing with.

Pillar candles look elegant and offer a warm glow.  Always make sure to trim the wick to one-quarter inch before lighting.  Allow to wax pool to extend all the way across the top, and if the sides start bowing out hug the edges in toward the flame by gently pushing in with thumbs .  Typically, this takes one hour for every inch across, and when done properly prevents the candle from tunneling.  If tunneling already has begun and you’re trying to keep the wick from being buried there’s a couple of ways of trouble shooting the problem.  Start by removing only the carbon buildup from the wick tip.  This usually resembles a little mushroom on the top.  If the candle will not stay lit try heating with a lighter while holding sideways to drip out over a coffee can, trash bag, etc revealing the wick.  Keep the candle burning by pouring out small amounts of wax as needed while hugging the tall sides in as they soften.Eventually the walls will level with the center  Once in a while, I’ve had one so bad that I pull out a saw and cut off some of the top rim.  If the wick is  far down the wax sides will only continue to drown it. To prevent tunneling,  make sure the wick is center when you blow it out. If it’s leaning to one side, use the end of your wick trimmers or a pencil to push it to center while the wax is still warm.  When the wax cools the wick will remain centered and ready for the next time it’s lit. If you need to blow a candle out early, just allow it to burn a little longer next time to even it out.  Don’t forget to use a pillar plate or coaster to protect surfaces from oil staining.

Jar candles are a low maintenance way of enjoying light and fragrance.  Really, the only keys to remember are keep the wicks centered and trimmed to prevent the flame from touching the side of the jar, blackening it or breaking it. Allow them to burn one hour for every inch in diameter to make sure all the surface wax pools.  Extinguish flame when there is less than half an inch of wax remaining in the glass. The glass gets extremely hot when the candle is that low and could ruin table surfaces or crack the glass.

Take into consideration what’s overhead and underfoot in areas you burn candles.  For instance, a candle may look nice on a shelf above the television but what happens if there is an accident?  Or areas where there are pictures or cabinets overhead, feel the areas above burning candles and make sure they’re not getting too hot.  The same rule applies to burning clusters of different height candles, if placed too close together they will melt each others sides.  High traffic and pet areas are, for obvious reasons, big no-no’s as well.  Instead of blowing candles use a snuffer to prevent spraying wax everywhere.  I hope these tips light the way to perfect candle burning and clarity.  If there are any further questions about, feel free to stop in the store and ask a sales associate.

Bruises Be Gone!

By: Angela

What is a bruise?

A bruise, also called a contusion , happens when a part of the body is struck and the muscle fibers and connective tissue underneath are crushed but the skin doesn’t break. When this occurs, blood from the ruptured capillaries (small blood vessels) near the skin’s surface escapes by leaking out under the skin. With no place to go, the blood gets trapped, forming a red or purplish mark that’s tender to the touch — a bruise. Bruises can happen for many reasons, but most are the result of bumping and banging into something. Fortunately, as anyone who’s ever sported a nice purple shiner knows, the mark isn’t permanent.

This month, we’ll show you how to treat bruises so they go away fast!

How can I get rid of bruises faster?

As soon as you bang an area of your body into something (or it bangs into you), try these helpful tips.

  • Elevate the area of the body you’ve hurt to keep blood from pooling under the skin.
  • Immediately apply a cold compress to the bruising area. If you are at home, grab a bag of frozen veggies from the fridge and apply it to the wounded area. Keep a cold pack on the bruise for at least 20 minutes, three times a day until the bruise disappears.
  • In addition to elevation, and cold compresses, apply my “Bruise Be Gone” oil to the affected area twice daily. This blend of natural essential oils will aid in blood circulation and skin rejuvenation.

“Bruise Be Gone” Oil Recipe

In a 1/2 oz. amber glass bottle, mix the following:

30 drops Cypress Essential Oil

10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil

10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Fill the rest of the bottle with natural Apricot Kernel Oil

Directions: Shake well and apply twice daily to bruised skin.

All of the oil recipe ingredients are available at Earth Lore in Plymouth, MI, along with a handy selection of books for making your own additional herbal body products.  While you’re here, check out Earth lore’s new stock of Yogi brand teas, herbal soaps, and bath salts. Danburite – Clearing the Path

Danburite

Danburite Crystal

This universe that we live in is a constant state of change.  Try as we might (and we do try), there is nothing that can be done to stop this ever-persistent push forward along our respective paths.  Indeed, what could we gain by staying in place anyway?

Sometimes changes – even positive ones – can be a great source of stress and uncertainty.  This month, we’ll discuss danburite and its role in smoothing the way ahead in uncertain times.

Danburite exhibits several properties that can be invaluable for those facing large changes or decisions.  It can help awaken your inner guidance – the part of you who knows the way ahead and how best to apprehend it.  When held, it also assists in releasing the past, on both the emotional and karmic levels.

Danburite also enhances patience, and can reveal the positive aspects of the situation we find ourselves in.

Clearing the Path with Danburite

  • 1 Piece Danburite
  • At least 3 small strips (3 or 4-inch squares will be fine) of fabric from old clothing (it’s important that they belong to you)
  • A bowl of water
  • A pinch of salt
  • A sharpie (or anything that will write on fabric)

As with most practices, we recommend cleansing the area and your materials with white sage smoke before beginning.

  1. Find a quiet, peaceful place to sit without distraction.
  2. Lay your materials out in front of you
  3. On the first strip of fabric, write the name of what you would like to leave behind.  Avoid using people’s names – aim for things like “confusion” or “unhappiness”.  You may write more than one of these.
  4. On the second strip, write the name of something you would like to keep to help with your journey.  Again, avoid people’s names.  Try something like “patience” or “determination”.  Only write one of these.
  5. Finally, on the third strip, write the name of your goal.
  6. Place all of the strips in the bowl of water, and put the danburite crystal on top to keep them underwater.  The crystal charges the water, which in turn charges the strips of intentioned cloth.
  7. Sprinkle the salt into the water in a spiral pattern, starting at the center and circling outward.
  8. Take the bowl and leave it in a safe place outdoors.
  9. When 24 hours have passed, take the wet cloth strips out of the bowl.
  10. Bury the strip(s) that represent things to be left behind.  Hang from a tree or bush the one representing that which helps you in your journey.  Place the one symbolizing your goal in your clothing drawer.  Do not rinse or wash it further.
  11. The water should be poured down the drain, or into another source of running water.

Earth Lore, as always, handles all of the materials mentioned in this practice (except your old clothing).
